Quilted by Marilyn Gipson 66" x 59"
This quilt was created to praise the day Barack Obama was elected the 44th president of the United States of America. Central to this quilt is an Atlas figure who is burdened like President Obama by all our hopes, dreams, realistic and unrealistic expectations, and the weight left by the previous administration symbolized by the world on his shoulders and the Capitol building below his feet. I celebrate President Obama's dual heritage with Sankofa cloth on one side and stars both within the fabric and quilted onto the fabric on the other side. Surrounding this figure are the written words of poets and journalists.
